May 27, 2007: Remembering Lost Grandparents

This is an intensely personal set of photos. I never knew my paternal grandfather; he died at the age of 52 just four months to the day after my parents got married. My maternal grandfather died in 1979 when I was six; I barely remember him. Both of my grandmothers passed in the last several years, each after long, unpleasant declines. In fact, this was my first visit to Fort Snelling National Cemetery since my maternal grandmother's funeral last summer. So, here they are -- my grandparents, together in one place for the first time since 1971. I miss them all.

Barely two hours into a weekend trip, after brazenly ignoring multiple signs warning "Do not drink the water! Tainted by coliform bacteria." posted on virtually every door inside a southern Minnesota rest area, my father is forced to resort to a homeopathic remedy in an attempt to avert an unpleasant run-in (or is it run-out?) with some particularly nasty bacteria.

After an endless, frigid winter, my father finally takes down the Christmas lights at the old homestead...which will go back up again in just six months.
